Job Summary
Under the supervision of the nurse manager, performs the receptionist or secretarial duties on the patient care unit while functioning as the focal communication source and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean physical environment. Performs related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of the patient and at time fills in as a nurse assistant.

Responsibilities

•    Assists in the preparation of nursing units, patient’s, rooms and beds.
•    Assists in and may accompany patient in the admission, transfer and discharge procedures.
•    Notifies licensed nurse of any STAT orders.
•    Maintains the patient’s clinical record as prescribed by hospital and unit policy.
•    Provides general nursing care under the supervision of licensed staff.
•    Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure and intake/output measurements. And reports abnormalities in vital signs to direct nurse or charge nurse as indicated.
•    Prepares patient for meals, serves and removes trays, assists with meals or feeds patient.
•    Posts patient allergies on clinical record, Checks chart of all patients scheduled for surgery, maintains a well-organized nursing station which includes having packets ready for surgery and admissions.
•    Answers patient call lights; attends to patient needs; makes rounds to assigned patients when able to.
•    Assists patients with handling and care of clothing and other personal property and documentation of patient belongings.
•    Communicates appropriately and clearly to nurse, charge nurse, co-workers and physicians.
•    Provides care appropriate to disease condition and age of the patient.
•    Collects and transports specimens.
•    Performs various clerical and secretarial functions for unit personnel within the Ward Clerk’s sphere of responsibility.
•    Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations in a positive manner in all assignments. And maintains a positive “guest relations” attitude.
•    Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.  Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.  Functions as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
•    Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served.  Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
•    Receives, greets, and directs patients, visitors, and hospital personnel arriving on unit or calling the patient care unit.
•    Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
•    Documentation meets current standards and policies.
•    Maintains cost containment efforts.
•    Participates in performance improvement activities.
•    When in downtime, may be able to place orders in the computer for all physician orders in their scope of practice I.E., laboratory, x-rays, etc.
•    Answers the intercom when nursing personnel are unavailable.
•    Orders supplies and maintains the supply room.

Required Skills/Abilities 

•    Previous Acute Hospital experienced preferred. 
•    Physical ability to perform all C.N.A./Ward Clerk duties which include turning, positioning and lifting of patients of various age, size and weight.
•    Preferred Computer knowledge, ability to work with Excel documents, ability to type, customer service skills.

Education & Experience

•    High School graduate or equivalency.
•    Must have CPR certification upon hire or obtain during orientation. CPR certification must remain current during employment.
•    Current C.N.A Certificate to practice in the State of California or enrolled in a training program which shall be finished and/or a state competency evaluation which must be successfully completed within four (4) months of employment.

Job Type: Per-Diem, Day Shift

Pay: $30.00 - $33.00 per hour
