Job Summary

The Director of Health Information Management (HIM) is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of the HIM department, including the planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of systems for acquiring, analyzing, coding, indexing, storing, and retrieving health information. This position ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies. The HIM Director may also oversee utilization review and registry functions where applicable.

Responsibilities

•    Establishes, implements, and maintains HIM policies, procedures, standards, and objectives aligned with legal and regulatory requirements.
•    Monitors compliance with policies and relevant regulations (e.g., HIPAA, CMS, The Joint Commission).
•    Ensures the accuracy, integrity, confidentiality, and security of patient medical records.
•    Assures records meet quality standards for completeness and conformance to applicable regulatory and accreditation bodies.
•    Supervises and evaluates HIM personnel; provides coaching, training, and performance feedback.
•    Develops department schedules, productivity benchmarks, and staffing plans to meet operational goals.
•    Monitors and assists in the development, implementation, and oversight of the department's annual budget, ensuring compliance with organizational financial policies and goals.
•    Develops and distributes statistical and analytical reports related to medical record documentation and hospital operations.
•    Identifies trends and areas for improvement based on health information data.
•    Oversees the release of medical information to authorized entities.
•    Implements procedures to manage subpoenas, legal inquiries, and patient access to health information.
•    Collaborates with clinical, administrative, legal, and IT departments to ensure documentation standards and information exchange needs are met.
•    Provides training and guidance to physicians and staff on documentation requirements, policy changes, and regulatory updates.
•    Coordinates and supports research activities requiring access to medical records.
•    Promotes continuing education and professional development for HIM staff.
•    Participates in assigned meetings as required.
•    Evaluates new technologies and best practices for potential integration into department operations.
•    Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities 

•    Deep understanding of health information management principles, privacy regulations, and accreditation standards.
•    Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
•    Proficient in health IT systems, data reporting tools, and health record compliance.
•    Ability to manage multiple projects and lead process improvements across departments.
•    Working knowledge of ICD-10, CPT coding, and electronic health record systems.
•    Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) required.
•    Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) or similar credential preferred.

Education & Experience

•    Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Informatics, or related field required.
•    Master’s degree preferred.
•    Minimum five (5) years of progressive leadership experience in HIM within a healthcare setting.

Job Type: Full-time, Day Shift

Pay: $150,000- $185,000 annually
