Position Summary

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. The Staff Nurse I is a newly licensed registered nurse hired into a full-time Emergency Department Nurse position through the hospital’s New Graduate Nurse Residency Program. The nurse provides direct and indirect patient care within the registered nurse’s scope of practice, organizational policies, and demonstrated level of competency. The Staff Nurse I participates in a structured six-month formal residency program. During orientation, responsibilities are progressively assigned with an appropriate level of supervision and preceptor support.  Upon successful completion of the precepted period, the nurse transitions into the regular full-time Staff Nurse I position in the Emergency Department and continues participating in the transition-to-practice components of the residency through completion of the six-month formal program. Additional education, support, and remediation may be provided based on competency progression.

Key Responsibilities

  • During orientation, the Staff Nurse I performs the following duties with the level of supervision and preceptor support appropriate to the nurse’s demonstrated competency. Following successful competency validation, the nurse performs these responsibilities independently within the registered nurse’s scope of practice and organizational standards and policies.
  • Develops knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition
  • Administers medications safely according to nursing and organizational standards
    Safely prepares and administers medications according to authorized orders, protocols, and organizational policy.
  • Performs and documents comprehensive, focused, and emergency patient assessments and reassessments.
  • Recognizes, communicates, and responds to changes in patient condition.
  • Performs triage according to organizational policy and the approved emergency-severity classification system.
  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises individualized plans of care
    Assesses and reassesses pain and implements appropriate pain-management interventions.
  • Monitors cardiac rhythms and other clinical and physiologic data.
  • Recognizes dysrhythmias and initiates appropriate interventions according to authorized protocols, provider orders, organizational policy, and the nurse’s scope of practice.
  • Assists providers with emergency procedures and treatments.
  • Provides age-appropriate emergency nursing care to neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Initiates and participates in resuscitative and emergency-response activities.
  • Provides patient and family education, emotional support, and discharge or transfer instructions.
  • Collaborates and communicates with providers and members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. 
  • Coordinates care and delegates appropriate tasks within applicable scope-of-practice requirements.
  • Documents patient care accurately and according to current organizational standards.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations
  • Operates emergency equipment safely and according to organizational requirements.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments
  • Participates in performance improvement activities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current California Registered Nurse License required
  • Current BLS required at time of hire
  • NIHSS Certification should be obtained within thirty days of hire
  • ACLS, PALS should be obtained within ninety days of hire
  • TNCC should be obtained within six months of hire date
  • Required completion and achievement of established passing score on the hospital’s basic nursing medication competency examination
  • Successful completion of Arrhythmia course preferred
  • Prior registered nursing experience is not required
  • Basic computer knowledge required
  • Able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing required

Job Type: Full-time, Nights

Pay: $68.96/hour
